structure of the resting state of cytochrome P450cam (CYP101), a heme thiolate protein, shows a cluster of six water molecules in the substrate binding pocket, one of which is coordinating to iron(III) as sixth ligand. The resting state is low-spin and changes to high-spin when substrate camphor binds and H2O is removed. In contrast to the protein, previously synthesised enzymemodels such as H2OFeIII(porph)(ArS−)
been synthesized carrying a covalently bound, proximal S–Me ligand and an imidazole co-ordinating to the iron; UV and 1H NMR spectroscopy and electrochemistry show that compounds are close analogues of cytochromec.

Manganese porphyrin systems carrying cyclodextrin binding groups can regioselectively and stereo selectively hydroxylate bound steroid substrates, using iodosobenzene as oxidant, but hydrogen peroxide and other simple oxidants Such as sodium hypochlorite are not effective in water.
