  A variety of optically active 4,4-disubstituted allenecarboxylic acid methyl esters were prepared from simple alpha,alpha -disubstituted phenyl acetate through base treatment of the esters to generate ketenes, followed by successive Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction.
