Stereocontrolled construction of octahydroquinolizines, octahydroindolizines, hexahydrobenzo[a]quinolizines, and an octahydroindolo[2,3-a]quinolizine by an intramolecular double Michael reaction: synthesis of (±)epilupinine
trifluoromethanesulphonate in the presence of triethylamine at –78 to 20 °C. A simple synthesis of an alkaloid, (±)-epilupinine, was accomplished. Hexahydrobenzo[a]-quinolizin-4-ones and an octahydroindolo[2,3-a]quinolizin-4-one were also constructed by the same method.

A compound represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 olefinically unsaturated organic radical having functionality which renders the nitrogen atom electron deficient, the olefinic unsaturation functionality being polymerizable, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl radical, or R and R.sup.1 together with the nitrogen atom can form an olefinically unsaturated 5 to 7-member ring which has functionality that renders the nitrogen atom electron deficient and the olefinic unsaturation functionality is polymerizable, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or acyl radical, or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together are a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkylene group, R.sup.4 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, acyl, ester, amide or acid group, and n is an integer from 1 to 10, provided n is not 1 when R is (meth)acryloyl, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are methyl and R.sup.1 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen. Under acidic conditions the above compounds in which R.sup.1 is hydrogen afford cyclic hemiamidals and hemiamide ketals of the following formula: ##STR2## The dialkyl acetal and ketal compounds and the cyclic hemiamidal and hemiamide ketal compounds can be homopolymerized or polymerized with other copolymerizable monomers.

A copolymer emulsion for bonding nonwoven products comprising an aqueous medium having colloidally dispersed therein a copolymer consisting essentially of vinyl acetate, 5-35 wt % ethylene and 2 to 10 wt % of an amide functional crosslinking comonomer which is N-methylolacrylamide or a compound of the formula R--NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH(OR').sub.2 where R is (meth)acryloyl, R' is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group and n is 3 or 4, the copolymer emulsion prepared in the presence of 0.1 to 1 wt % polyvinyl pyrrolidone, based on vinyl acetate in the copolymer. Such emulsion binder copolymers demonstrate improved solvent resistance.
