    A method for reducing odor is provided. In one embodiment, the method comprises modifying the surface of silica particles with a transition metal so that the silica particles are bonded to the transition metal through a covalent or coordinate bond. The method further comprises contacting the modified silica particles with an odorous compound, the transition metal facilitating the capture of the odorous compound.

    The present invention relates to high performance wire and cable compositions and to hot melt adhesives containing a silyl-grafted ethylene copolymer having particularly low levels of glycidyl acrylate monomer. The preferred epoxy glycidyl methacrylate copolymerized into the polymer backbone provides a graft site for the aminosilane. Subsequent moisture crosslinking at the silyl site of the thermally stable graft copolymer provides compositions with attractive physical properties for wire and cable semicons, insulation, and jackets, as well as hot melt adhesives. The preferred aminosilane is N-cyclohexylaminopropyl trimethoxysilane.

    Disclosed is a process for esterifying and/or transesterifying a polymer having a polyethylenic backbone and pendant acid and/or ester moieties comprising contacting a melt of the polymer with a transesterifying compound so that the polymer undergoes esterification and/or transesterification but not alcoholysis. The esterified or transesterified polymer also has pendant ester moieties which differ in kind and/or number from the unreacted polymer. In one embodiment, the process also comprises adding an amount of a transition metal salt that is effective to promote oxygen scavenging. Also in a further embodiment, the process comprises irradiating the transesterified polymer with actinic radiation to reduce the induction period before oxygen scavenging commences. Also disclosed are compositions comprising a component which comprises an ethylenic or polyethylenic backbone and a pendant or terminal moiety comprising a benzylic, allylic, or ether-containing radical. The invention also embodies new polyethylenic oxygen scavenging compositions comprising a transition-metal salt and the above component. Methods of making the compositions, and methods and compositions using the ethylenic or polyethylenic compositions, are disclosed.

    A continuous process for producing rubber-modified methyl methacrylate syrups which comprises continuously supplying a material liquor comprising 1 to 20 parts by weight of a rubbery polymer dissolved in 100 parts by weight of a monomer comprising 60 to 100% by weight of methyl methacrylate, and a radical-polymerization initiator to a first reaction zone, continuously polymerizing at such a stationary conversion that the rubbery polymer is dispersed in the form of particles form while maintaining the temperature and residence time in the first reaction zone so that a steady state is achieved in the zone and the steady-state concentration of the initiator in the zone 1/2 to 1/1,000 times the concentration of initiator supplied, continuously taking out the resulting reaction mixture from the first reaction zone, and passing it through a second reaction zone having a volume of 0 to 5 times the volume of the first reaction zone, to.obtain a stable syrup comprising a disperse phase which is a solution of the rubbery polymer in the monomer and a continuous phase which is a solution of the resinous polymer in the monomer, and the use of these materials in the production of methyl methacrylate cast sheets and molding materials having an excellent impact resistance from the syrups.
