  [EN] A method for determining whether an individual has vascular inflammation such as atherosclerosis, is described. The method comprises a bead-based homogenous fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assay that includes a confocal imaging system to detect atheronal B, a steroid produced by cholesterol ozonolysis, in the biological fluid of an individual wherein the presence of atheronal B in the biological fluid is an indicator of vascular inflammation. The method is particularly useful for identifying individuals who have atherosclerosis or are at risk of developing atherosclerosis. The method is also useful for monitoring the progression of atherosclerosis in an individual or regression of atherosclerosis in an individual, particularly, an individual undergoing treatment for atherosclerosis.
