sigma(N)-Coordinated compounds [PtCl3(4-X-C6H4NO)](-) K+ have been prepared and studied by C-13 NMR spectroscopy and by variable temperature H-1 NMR spectroscopy. It is shown that the anomalous behaviour of the NO group on the C-13 chemical shifts is modified by coordination but where X = N(CH3)(2) or OCH, the free energy barriers to rotation of the NO group determined by H-1 NMR studies are closely similar to those of the free ligands. Restricted rotation of the N(CH3)(2) group was also studied in [PtCl3(2-CH3-4-N(CH3)(2)-C6H3NO)](-) K+. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
