A novel one-pot synthesis of 1H,3H-thiazolo[3,4-a]benzimidazoles has been developed by the reaction between o-phenylenediamine, 2-mercaptocarboxylic acid and a variety of carbonyl compounds in refluxing benzene.

The generation and reactivity of novel benzo-2,5-diazafulvenium methides was explored. Thiazolo[3,4-a]benzimidazole-2,2-dioxides have been prepared and used as precursors of benzo-2,5-diazafulvenium methides, whose pericyclic reactions led to the synthesis of benzo[d]imidazole annulated heterocycles and vinylbenzo[d]imidazoles.
