The major primary product of the co-oxidation of indene and thiophenol is trans-2-phenylmercapto-1-indanyl hydroperoxide, which spontaneously rearranges to the two racemes of trans-2-phenylsulphinyl-1-indanol. Attack by the phenylmercaptyl radical on the indene molecule is, within 5 per cent, exclusively at the 2-position and subsequent addition of oxygen to the intermediate 2-phenylmercaptoindanyl
