Photochemical synthesis and NMR analysis of novel regiospecifically trifluoromethyl-substituted dibenzosemibullvalene

Preparation of the novel regiospecific bis(trifluoromethyl)-substituted dibenzobarrelene (2) and dibenzosemibullvalene (3) is described. The stereostructure of compounds 2 and 3 has been deduced on the basis of their H-1, F-19 and C-13 1D/2D NMR spectra. Three-bond C-F couplings were used as a structural probe while the longest C-F coupling observed was over four bonds.

Synthesis, photophysical properties, and photostability of 9,10-disubstituted anthracenes with fluorine-containing groups (FCG) are described. The values of phi(f) and lambda(em) greatly go up by the meso-substitution with FCG, and a nice corelationship between phi(f) and A(pi) (magnitude of pi conjugation length in the excited single state) is observed.
