In the trial scale-up of the sulfonation of phenylchloroformate and subsequent formation of sulfonated phenyl carbonates, samples from the batch process showed a number of unexpected by-products. A process is described for obtaining sulfophenyl quaternary ammonium or phosphonium substituted carbonic acid esters. These esters are prepared through sulfonation with sulfur trioxide of aromatic chloroformates followed by reaction of the sulfonated aromatic chloroformate with quaternary ammonium or phosphonium substituted alcohols. The resultant sulfophenyl esters are useful as bleach precursors in combination with peroxygen compounds such as sodium perborate or percarbonate.
