    A polymer having a high refractive index is obtained by polymerizing a urethanized acrylic or methacrylic monomer obtained by reacting the hydroxyl group of an acrylic or methacrylic monomer having a nucleus-halogen-substituted aromatic ring and a hydroxyl group with the isocyanate group of a polyfunctional isocyanate. This polymer is valuable as a resin material for a plastic lens.

    A halogen-containing resin lens material, having a refractive index of no = 1.55 or higher, an Abbe number of 27 or higher and good dyeable property and comprising a copolymer containing 10 to 90 wt. % of a monomer (I) represented by the formula (I) shown below: wherein: R1 represents hydrogen or CH3 group; X' a halogen atom except for fluorin; and p the number of substituted halogens which is an integer selected from 1 to 5, and n is an integer selected from 1 to 4, R1 existing in plural number and being either identical or different, X1 when existing in plural number being either identical or different and 10 to 70 wt. % of a crosslinking monomer having two or more polymerizable functional groups (the percentages being based on the copolymer weight).

    The present invention relates to flame retardant polymer compositions possessing non-linear structural configurations. According to the invention, a preformed backbone polymer, selected from polyolefins or styrenic polymers or copolymer thereof, is reacted with a flame retardant reagent selected from tribromophenoxy- or pentabromophenoxy ethyl ester or acrylic or methacrylic acid. The non-linear structural configuration is a result from the grafting or crosslinking of the ester with the polymer. The preferred amounts of the flame retardant reagent in the polymer compositions are between 10% to 50% by weight of the compositions. The flame retardant reagents are characterized by their thermostability at high temperatures. Optionally synergistic fire retardant additives such as antimony oxide are incorporated in the compositions. The flame retardant ethylene-­propylene rubber compositions were found to possess improved properties with a V-O rating, being completely absent of any blooming effect.
