There is provided amino acid derivatives of formula I,
wherein p, q, R1, R2, R3, R4, Y, n and B have meanings given in the description which are useful as competitive inhibitors of trypsin-like proteases, such as thrombin, and in particular in the treatment of conditions where inhibition of thrombin is required (e.g. thrombosis) or as anticoagulants.

Method for producing 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid where (a) o-chlorophenol is reacted with glyoxylic acid to form 3-chloro-4-hydroxymandelic acid, (b) the 3-chloro-4-hydroxymandelic acid is reduced to 3-chloro-4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, and (c) the chloro group is cleaved from the 3-chloro-4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid.

Verfahren zur Herstellung von 4-Hyoroxyphenyessigsaure, wobei man
a) o-Chlorphenol mit Glyoxylsäure zu 3-Chlor-4-hydroxy-mandelsäure umsetzt,
b) die 3-Chlor-4-hydroxy- mandelsäure zu 3- Chlor-4-hydroxy- phenylessigsäure reduziert und
c) aus der 3-Chlor- 4- hydroxy- phenylessigsäure das Chlor abspaltet.
