    A general method for synthesizing mixed phosphonate diesters from monoesters using (1H-benzotriazol-1-yloxy)tris(dimethylamino) hexafluorophosphate or (1H-benzotriazol-1-yloxy)tripyrrolidinophosphonium hexafluorophosphate reagents is described. The reaction proceeded through a benzotriazolyl ester as shown by comparison with other reagents such as DCC, DCC/DMAP, DCC/1-hydroxybenzotriazole, bromotris(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate, or O-(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)-N,N,N',N'-tetramethyluronium hexafluorophosphate and by P-31 NMR analysis. This benzotriazolyl phosphonic ester intermediate was more reactive toward alcohols than toward amines, contrary to its carboxylic analogue.

The composition comprises about 80 to about 99.8 percent by weight of a miscible blend of a polyester with a polymer. Also disclosed is a process for the preparation of a film or sheet from this composition. Compensationa and protective films and sheets prepared from this composition are useful for backlight displays.

    This invention relates to a blend of biodegradable polymers comprising (A) about 5 % to about 95 % by weight of at least one flexible biodegradable polymer (A) having a glass transition less than about 0 °C, (B) about 5 % to about 95 % by weight of at least one rigid biodegradable polymer (B) having a glass transition greater than about 10 °C, and (C) about 0.25 to about 10 weight % of at least one compatibilizer (C), said percentages being based on the total weight of the polymer blend; where the polymer blend has a higher zero shear melt viscosity than polymers (A) and (B) separately.

    Flame retardant polyester compositions suitable for calendering may be prepared from polyesters having crystallization half time of at least 5 minutes, a plasticizer, a phosphorus-containing flame retardant miscible with the plasticized polyester, and an additive effective to prevent sticking of the polyester to the calendar rolls. Also disclosed are processes for flame retardant films or sheets by calendering the above compositions and the flame retardant films or sheets produced therefrom. These films and sheets have excellent appearance, flexibility, and flame retardancy, and can be used in a wide range of decorative and packaging applications.
