A silacyclopentadiene (silole) undergoes photo-induced [2+2] cycloaddition with CS2 to afford the corresponding beta-dithiolactones. The electron transfer from singlet excited state of the silole to CS2 is shown to play an important role in the cycloaddition reaction.
