The syntheses of phenylbromo- and phenyliodotrisilanes XnSi3Ph8-n (X = Br, I) are described. starting from 1.1.1.3.3.3-hexaphenyltrisilane, octaphenyltrisilane. 1-(p-Tolyl)heptaphenyltrisilane or 1.1.1-Tris(p-tolyl)pentaphenyltrisilane. A subsequent reduction with LiAlH4 gives the corresponding phenyltrisilanes HnSi3Ph8-n. All compounds were characterized with spectroscopic methods (Si-29-NMR, IR) and elemental analyses.

Halogenated trisilanes XnSi3H8-n with X = Cl, Br, I and n = 2-7 as well as the tetrasilanes H2XSiSiX2SiX2SiX2H have been prepared by dearylation of appropriate aryltrisilanes and aryltetrasilanes (aryl = phenyl, p-tolyl) with either liquid or gaseous hydrogen halides. The compounds have been characterized with elemental analysis as well as Si-29 NMR spectroscopy. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
