Abstract We investigated the mechanism of the reaction of paraformaldehyde with phosphorus trichloride in the presence of carboxylic acids (acetic, propanoic, and formic). Our results revealed that bisphosphonic acids were obtained without the use of water. Borontribromide cleanly and quantitatively converts dimethyl-, diethyl-, diisopropyl-, and ditertiobutyl phosphonates RP(O)(OR’)2 into the corresponding phosphonic acids RP(O)(OH)2 via methanolysis. The use of borontribromide is compatible with a variety of functionalities in the R group.
