    A method for producing monohydroxy-functionalized dialkylphosphinic acids, esters, and salts, characterized in that a) a phosphinic acid source (I) is reacted with olefins (IV) in the presence of a catalyst A to obtain an alkylphosphonous acid, the salt or ester (II) thereof, b) the obtained alkylphosphonous acid, the salt or ester (II) thereof is reacted with alkylene oxides of formula (V) in the presence of a catalyst B to obtain a monofunctionalized dialkylphosphinic acid derivative (III), catalyst A represents transition metals and/or transition metal compounds and/or catalyst systems composed of a transition metal and/or a transition metal compound and at least one ligand, and catalyst B is a Lewis acid.

    A flexible polyurethane foam-forming composition and the flexible polyurethane foam obtained therefrom contain, as flame-retardant additive, a halogen-free phosphonate compound which is substantially unreactive for isocyanate, contains at least about 5 weight percent phosphorus, has an acid value of about 2 mg KOH/g or less, a volatility as measured by thermogravimetric analysis not exceeding a 5.0 percent weight loss at a temperature of about 150° C., and a weight average molecular weight of from about 200 to about 2000.

    The phosphorus-containing polycarbonate polyol disclosed herein has a structural unit (I) represented by a formula: —OCOO— and a structural unit (II) represented by a residue A, wherein A denotes a n-valent residue in which n of alcoholic hydroxyl groups are removed from a phosphorus compound having at least n of alcoholic hydroxyl groups, in which n is an integer of 2 or larger, and wherein a terminal group of the polyol is a alcoholic hydroxyl group. The novel phosphorus-containing polycarbonate polyol, as a reactive flame-retardant agent, can provide flame-retardant properties easily to polyurethane or the like.
