    A process for the production of salts of aryloxyalkanol-sulphuric acid half esters of the general formula Ar-O-R-O-SO2-O-M in which Ar represents an aromatic residue in which an aromatic nucleus is directly linked with the oxygen atom, R signifies an aliphatic residue and M signifies a salt-forming cation, comprises heating an aromatic hydroxy compound with a salt of a haloalkanol-sulphuric acid half ester at a temperature of at least 50 DEG C. and in the presence of an acid-binding agent. M may be the cation of an inorganic base, e.g. alkali liquors or ammonia or an organic base, e.g. mono-, di- or triethanolamine or tetraethylol ammonium hydroxide. Salts of haloalkanol-sulphuric acid half esters may contain chlorine or bromine as halogen and may be obtained by sulphation of alcohols, e.g. 2-chloroethanol. Aromatic hydroxy compounds mentioned include phenol, 2- and 4-chlorophenol, 2,4,6- and 2,4,5-trichloro-phenol, 4-bromo-phenol, 2,4-dibromophenol, o-, m- and p-cresols, 4-chloro-o-cresol, 4,5-dichloro-o-cresol, 4,6-dichloro-o-cresol, 4-chloro-m-cresol, 4,6-dichloro-m-cresol, 2-chloro-p-cresol, 2,6-dichloro-p-cresol, 2,4-, 2,5-, 2,6-, 3,5-, 6-chloro-2,4-, 4-chloro-2,6-, 4-chloro-2,5-, 4-chloro-3,5- and 2,4,6-trichloro-xylenols, 4-nitrophenol, pseudocumenol, mesitol, isopropylphenol, isopropylphenol, carvacrol, thymol, 4-butylphenol, 4-isoamyl-, 4-isoheptyl-, 4-isodecyl, 4-phenyl-, 4-chloro-2-phenyl- and 4-benzyl phenols, guaiacol, 4-phenoxyphenol, 1-naphthol, 4-chloro-1-naphthol 1 - chloro - 2 - naphthol, 1 - bromo - 2 - naphthol, 2,21 - dihydroxy - diphenyl, 4,41 - dihydroxy - diphenyl, 4,41 - dihydroxydiphenyl methane, 4,41 - dihydroxy - diphenylpropane and 4,41 - dihydroxydiphenylsulphone. Acid-binding agents mentioned include sodium and potassium hydroxides, organic bases which form salts with phenolic compounds, alkali metal carbonates and alkaline earth metal hydroxides. In examples: phenoxyethyl-(1), p - cresoxyethyl - (2), o - cresoxyethyl - (3), 2,4 - dichlorophenoxyethyl - (4), 4 - chloro - o - cresoxyethyl - (5), o - methoxy - phenoxyethyl-(6), naphth - 1 - oxyethyl - (7), p - carboxy - phenoxyethyl - (9), 3,5 - dimethylphenoxyethyl-(10), 4 - chloro - 3,5 - dimethylphenoxyethyl-(11), 2,4,6 - tribromo - phenoxyethyl - (12), and 2,4,6 - trichloro - 3,5 - dimethylphenoxyethyl-(13) sodium sulphates and b ,b -diphenylpropane - 4,41 - bis - (oxyethyl - sodium sulphate) are obtained by reacting the appropriate phenols with b -chloroethyl-sodium sulphate in aqueous caustic soda solution.     The present invention provides: an excavation-stabilizing slurry which merely spoils with difficulty, and has high viscosity and low fluid loss; a production process for the excavation-stabilizing slurry; and an excavation method involving the use of the excavation-stabilizing slurry. The excavation-stabilizing slurry comprises an emulsion containing a polymer which thickens with an alkaline substance. The production process for an excavation-stabilizing slurry is a process comprising the step of adding an alkaline substance to an emulsion containing a polymer which thickens due to its reaction upon the alkaline substance, thus adjusting the pH of the emulsion to 6 or more to thicken the emulsion. The excavation method is a method comprising the step of excavating the earth while the collapse of the resultant trench walls is prevented using the above excavation-stabilizing slurry.
