  The stereochemistry of electrophilic substitutions of α‐nitrile metallocarbanions is probed through the deprotonation of enantioenriched α‐amino‐ and α‐oxynitriles bearing a carbamoyl or methoxycarbonyl group. The dipole‐stabilizing substituents affect the configurational stability and reactivity of the α‐nitrile metallocarbanions and also change the steric course (retention vs. inversion).

  The asymmetric 1,2-addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehyde SAMP-hydrazones in the presence of titanium tetrachloride and diethylether in dichloromethane at −100°C up to room temperature, removal of the chiral auxiliary and acid hydrolysis affords α-amino acids in high enantiomeric excesses (ee=94–97%).
