  A simple method for preparation of the title ring systems 3a-3d starting from 7-chloromethyl-8-chloro-1,3-dimethyl-7H-purine-2,6(1H,3H)-dione (1) and cyclic isothioureas 2 is described. First, alkylation of the mercapto group of compound 2 took place to give 7-isothiuronium derivative 5, which in turn cyclized to the final product 3 in alkaline medium.
