Novel and effective calcium ionbinding molecular fluorescent probes have been developed by systematic structural modification of BAPTA ionophore. The comprehensive computational studies suggested the role of the coordination number in the chelator moiety.

Ethereal solutions of the dianils I, when added under conditions of high dilution to a suspension of sodium sand in ether, give macrocyclic compounds II (n = 2–6) besides variable amounts of primary amines VI, secondary amines VIII and resinous products.
N′-tetraacetic acid (H4bapta), in which the distance between the chelating functions is changed, have been synthesized. The structure–interaction relationships of their complexation behavior with alkalineearth metal ions are discussed from the viewpoint of their acidity constants and stability constants of their chelate-complexes.

@ lon-selective compositions which comprise an ionophore, a compound capable of solvating the ionophore and a supporting matrix are disclosed. The ionophores useful in these compositions are certain crown ethers. These ion-selective compositions are particularly useful as ion-selective membranes which are capable of selectively transporting a first ion in preference to a second ion. Dry-operative electrodes using these ion-selective compositions as membranes are also disclosed.
