Cell surface carbohydrates of the Lewis blood group antigens, Lewis X (Lex), Lewis Y (Ley), Lewis A (Lea), and their sialylated derivatives, such as sialy Lewis X (sLex) and sialy Lewis A (sLea), play important roles in various recognition processes.
