In test devices used for polymerase chain reaction amplification of DNA, beads bearing reagents are used to attach to the DNA. However, in such test devices, the flow of liquid sample is through the layer of the beads. It is desirable in some test devices to have the flow of liquid sample past the bead layer. However, this has the disadvantage that a number of the beads may be washed away leaving an insufficient number to complete the test analysis. Described herein is a test device (10) comprising beads (80, 82, 84, 86) with a reagent attached, the beads being physically fused to a support (70). The support (70) comprises a material selected to have a melting temperature significantly lower than that of the beads (80, 82, 84, 86). Polyethylene is a preferred example of such a material.
