    Novel compounds represented by the formula: wherein R1 represent an aliphatic hydrocarbyl group, an aromatic hydrocarbyl group or an alicyclic hydrocarbyl group, X represents hydrogen, a glycidoxy group or an N,N-diglycidylamino group, R2 represents hydrogen or a methyl group, R3 represents an alkyl group, an alkemyl group, or an aryl group, p represents 0 or 1, q represents an integer of 1 to 4; r represents 1 or 2, and s represents an integer of 1 to 4, are obtained by reacting an amide compound with a halide compound such as epihalohydrin or dihalopropanol in the presence of a strongly basic compound. They are useful as starting meterials for reactive diluents, cross-linking agents, etc.

    An adsorbent is obtained by water-insolubilizing a homopolymer of one of N,N-di-substituted (meth)acrylamides represented by the structural formula given herein, a copolymer of two or more of the N,N-di-substituted (meth)-acrylamides or a copolymer of one or more of the N,N-di--substituted (meth)acrylamides and one or more copolymerizable monomers other than the N,N-di-substituted (meth)--acrylamides, said (meth)acrylamides being represented by the formulae: or wherein Rl stands for a hydrogen atom or methyl group, A stands for ―(CH2)n―, n being 4 - 6, or ―(CH2)2 0 ―(CH2)―, and Rz denotes a methyl or ethyl group. The adsorbent has the property that it is hydrophobicized to have higher adsorbability when heated and its adsorbability drops when cooled.

    A urine absorbing and holding material comprises either a homopolymer of at least one monomer selected from certain N-alkyl- or N-alkylene-substituted acrylamides and methacrylamides or a copolymer of two or more of these acrylamides and methacrylamides, or a copolymer of at least one of these acrylamides and methacrylamides with one or more monomers other than the said arcylamides and methacrylamides and copolymerizable therewith, the homopolymer or copolymer being a water-insolubilized product. This material, in the form of powder, granules, flakes, fibers or film, can be combined with a fibrous material in the form of a woven fabric, non-woven fabric or a flocculent material, into a useful urine absorbing composite for making up to into a pad, diaper or drawers.

    This invention provides cationic acrylamide polymers which are highly effective as paper strength agents, drainage agents and suspension flocculants, and which do not show much temporal deterioration; it also provides a method of manufacturing said polymers wherein the manufacturing equipment is compact and can be installed on site, and the cationicity of the polymers can be modified in a short time. This invention comprises a method of manufacturing cationic acrylamide polymers by reaction, with a hypohalogenite,of a (meth)acrylamide homopolymer, a copolymer of (meth)acrylamide and acrylonitrile, a copolymer of (meth)acrylamide and N,N-dimethylacrylamide, in a high temperature range of 50 - 110°C for a short time; the polymers manufactured by said process; and paper strength agents, drainage agents and flocculants having these polymers as their principal constituent.

    The invention provides a process for producing particulate polymer, which comprises polymerizing either one or more of N-alkyl- or N-alkylene-substituted (meth)acrylamides or a mixture of said one or more of N-alkyl- or N-alkylene-substituted (meth)acrylamides with other copolymerizable monomer(s) dispersed in an aqueous solution of an inorganic salt containing inorganic particles suspended therein. This process provides particulate polymer not containing such impurities as a polymer stabilizer or a surfactant. This polymer is useful as a concentrating agent, a base for sustained release, and the like.
