Thioformyl cyanide, HCSCN, was generated, under flash vacuum thermolysis conditions, by retro-ene and retro-Diels-Alder cleavages of allylcyanomethyl sulfide and 3-cyano-2-thiabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene, respectively, and unambiguously characterized in the gasphase by photoelectron spectroscopy. The elusive molecule thiofomyl cyanide, SCHCN (2), was generated by flash vacuum pyrolysis of allyl cyanomethyl sulfide (1) and characterized by argon matrix infrared spectroscopy. The observed infrared absorptions (2221, 1320, 1103, 889, and 824 cm−1) are in good agreement with ab initio molecular orbital calculations at the MP2/6-31G* level.

An efficient protocol for [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of allyl and propargyl thioethers is reported. The key sulfonium ylide intermediate is in situ formed via S-arylation of arynes. This transitionmetal-freemethod allows for ready access to a wide array of functionalized thioether derivatives in good to excellent yields.
