Arylation of α-phosphoryl sulfides via their pummerer rearrangement intermediates generated from the corresponding sulfoxides

Various aryl groups were introduced directly into the α-position of α-phosphoryl sulfides by treating their sulfoxides with trifluoroacetic anhydride and then with tin (IV) chloride in the presence of excess of the aryl compound.
The Horner–Wittig reaction of (1a,b) with phenyl isocyanate or dehydration of amides (4c–g) gave the C-sulphenylketenimines (3a–g) in moderate yields. Thermolysis of (3b) gave 2-ethoxy-3-phenylthioquinolin-4-ol (7)via intramolecular cyclization, and the reactions of (3e) and (3f) with CN-diphenylnitrone gave 3-methylthioindolones (10a) and (10b), respectively.
Regioselective anodic α-fluorination of α-(arylthio)benzylphosphonate esters and [(arylthio)methyl]- and [(heteroarylthio)methyl]phosphonate esters was successfully carried out at a glassy carbon anode or platinum anode in dimethoxyethane and nitromethane to provide the corresponding α-fluorophosphonate esters in excellent to moderate yields.

alpha-Mono- and alpha, alpha-disubstituted alpha-phosphoryl radicals 9 were generated from the easy accessible alpha-phosphoryl sulfides 4, 5 and alpha-phosphoryl selenides 11, 12 and reacted with the electron rich alkenes 6 under the reductive (n-Bu(3)SnH/AIBN) conditions to give the functionalized phosphonates 7 in 32 divided by 68% yield. Two fragmentation processes of the phosphonate a-alkoxy alkyl radicals are also described.
