Yttrium nitrate hexahydrate [Y(NO3)3·6H2O] was found to be an efficient catalyst for selective ring opening of epoxides with aliphatic, aromatic, and heteroaromatic amines at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. The system tolerated a variety of hindered and functionalized epoxides/amines and afforded the desired β-amino alcohols at low catalyst concentration.

Abstract Various β -aminoalcohols were prepared by the ring opening reaction of epoxides with aromatic amines in the presence of Fe(III) substituted Wells–Dawson type polyoxometalate, α 2 -[(n-C 4 H 9 ) 4 N] 7 P 2 W 17 FeO 61 ·3H 2 O, as an efficient catalyst. The reaction was performed under neutral condition at room temperature and afforded the corresponding products in high to excellent yields.

Highly Effective Opening of Epoxides with Aromatic Amines in Presence of β-Cyclodextrin in Water

Efficient ring opening of epoxides with aromatic amines catalyzed by ZrO(OTf)(2) is reported, and the corresponding beta amino (beta-amino acid) alcohols were obtained in high yields in CH3CN as solvent. The reactions were carried out at room temperature and in the presence of only 1.25 mol% of ZrO(OTf)(2). This catalyst can be reused several times without loss of its activity.
