photoactive group act as cages for divalent metalions. The uncaging mechanism of these complexes involves a photoreaction that converts the nitrobenzhydrol, which is para to the aniline nitrogen atom, into the corresponding nitrosobenzophenone. Resonance delocalization of the aniline into the distal carbonyl group of the photoproduct attenuates the ability of the nitrogen atom to interact with the

An aza-15-crown-5-ether functionalized bisthienylethene (BTE-15C5) was synthesized, which can reversibly capture and release calcium ions by UV/Vis irradiation. After doping this photochromic bisthienylethene with a two-component lecithin–Ca2+ organogel, the original deep-blue gel changed to light-blue fluid due to the cooperative binding with Ca2+ by the open-form bisthienylethene dopant. Upon UV irradiation, the closed isomer was formed which released the Ca2+ and the organogel was retrieved. Hence, a novel organic simple doped-type three-component photo-induced gel-to-sol transition system was constructed.
A bifunctional compound 1 was designed and synthesized, in which the donor–π-conjugated–acceptor-cyanoacrylic acid configuration is suited for DSSC, while the tetraoxa-azacrown (donor) part also acts as the recognition unit for e.g.Ca2+ and the output of DSSC is utilized as signal transduction, demonstrating a new recognition concept using DSSC.

Three different synthetic strategies were utilized in the construction of a novel class of macrocyclic containing o-nitrobenzhydrol group II cation cages. The synthetic methodology presented herein is unparalleled in scope toward the preparation of caged complexes for various main group and transition block cations.
