    Low viscous and highly conductive phosphonium ionic liquids based on bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide anion as potential electrolytes

    The physical and electrochemical properties of room-temperature ionic liquids based on quaternary phosphonium cations together with a bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide anion are presented in this report. The bis (fluorosulfonyl)amide-based phosphonium ionic liquids were relatively low-melting, low viscous and highly conductive when compared to those of the corresponding bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide-based ionic liquids. Particularly, the ionic liquids containing a methoxy group in the phosphonium cations indicated very low viscosities and high conductivities. The FSA-based phosphonium RTILs were thermally stable up to nearly 300 degrees C. The voltammetric analysis suggested that the bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide-based phosphonium ionic liquids showed high electrochemical stability similar to the corresponding bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide-based ionic liquids.     The present invention provides an ionic liquid including a quaternary phosphonium salt represented by general formula (1): wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 each represent a linear alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a branched alkyl group having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, an alicyclic alkyl group having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, or an alkoxyalkyl group represented by —(CH 2 ) n O—R 5 (wherein n is an integer of 1 to 6; and R 5 represents a methyl group or an ethyl group); at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 is an alkoxyalkyl group; R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 may be the same or different; R 1 and R 2 together may form a ring; and X represents an anion. The present invention also provides a reaction solvent including the ionic liquid.

    The present invention provides an electrolyte composition used in a charge storage device, which comprises an ionic liquid that has high ionic conductivity and is highly safe with no risks of inflammation and the like. It is an electrolyte composition used in a charge storage device, which comprises a quaternary phosphonium salt ionic liquid represented by general formula (1) as described below. The viscosity at 25° C. of this ionic liquid is preferably 200 mPa·sec or less. In the general formula (1), it is preferable that the alkoxyalkyl group be a methoxymethyl group and that all the alkyl groups be ethyl groups. wherein R 1 represents a linear or branched alkyl group containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R 2 represents a methyl group or an ethyl group; n represents an integer between 1 and 3; and X represents N(SO 2 CF 3 ) 2 .
