    Effect of Cation on Physical Properties and CO2 Solubility for Phosphonium-Based Ionic Liquids with 2-Cyanopyrrolide Anions

    A series of tetraalkylphosphonium 2-cyanopyrrolide ([P-nnnn][2-CNPyr]) ionic liquids (ILs) were prepared to investigate the effect of cation size on physical properties and CO2 solubility. Each IL was synthesized in our laboratory and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Their physical properties, including density, viscosity, and ionic conductivity, were determined as a function of temperature and fit to empirical equations. The density gradually increased with decreasing cation size, while the viscosity decreased noticeably. In addition, the [P-nnnn] [2-CNPyr] ILs with large cations exhibited relatively low degrees of ionicity based on analysis of the Walden plots. This implies the presence of extensive ion pairing or formation of aggregates resulting from van der Waals interactions between the long hydrocarbon substituents. The CO2 solubility in each IL was measured at 22 degrees C using a volumetric method. While the anion is typically known to be predominantly responsible for the CO2 capture reaction, the [P-nnnn][2-CNPyr] ILs with shorter alkyl chains on the cations exhibited slightly stronger CO2 binding ability than the ILs with longer alkyl chains. We attribute this to the difference in entropy of reaction, as well as the variation in the relative degree of ionicity.

    An object of the present invention is to provide an electrolyte solution for lithium-ion secondary batteries comprising a tetraalkylphosphonium salt which improves the cycle characteristics and safety of lithium-ion batteries, and to provide a lithium-ion secondary battery using the electrolyte solution. Disclosed is an electrolyte comprising a tetraalkylphosphonium salt represented by general formula (1) wherein R 1 represents a linear, branched or alicyclic alkyl group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms and R 2 represents a linear, branched or alicyclic alkyl group having 1 to 14 carbon atoms, provided that R 1 and R 2 are different from each other and the total number of carbon atoms in the phosphonium cation is 20 or less; and X represents an anion.

    A ruthenium-phosphine complex is represented by the formula: [RuH₁(R-BINAP) m]X n, (I) wherein R-BINAP is a tertiary phosphine represented by formula (II): R is hydrogen or metal; X is ClO₄, BF₄ or PF₆; and when l is 0, then m is 1 and nʹ is 2, and when l is 1, then m is 2 and nʹ is 1. Synthesis methods are (a) Ru₂ Cl₄(R-BINAP)₂(N(C₂H₅)₂) reacted with a salt MX where M is Na, K, Li, Mg or Ag in mixed water and methylene chloride in presence of a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt as transfer agent, (b) Ru(R-BINAP) (OAc)₂ reacted with an acid HX with stirring in mixed methylene chloride and methanol; and (c) RuHCl(R-BINAP)₂ reacted with MX in mixed water and methylene chloride in presence of a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt, to give complex where l=1, m=2 and nʹ=1. The complex is used as catalyst in synthesis, especially asymmetric hydrogenation of allyl alcohols, and is effective at pressure even at room temperature, e.g. for making citronellol from geraniol, in high selectivity.
