Seven isomorphous 1D chain Ln3+ complexes Ln(BTA)(HCOO)(H2O)3 (Ln = Pr (1), Gd (2), Eu (3), Tb (4) Dy (5), Er (6) and Yb (7)), and two formate coordinating and bridging 3D Ln3+ complexes Ln(HCOO)3 (Ln = Pr (8) and Nd (9)) have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Although the Ln3+ ions in 1–7 have different radius, the trivalent lanthanide ions in 1–7 show the same coordinated environment. The well-defined single crystal structures of 8 and 9 are first samples for formate-bridged Ln3+ metallic complexes. The luminescent properties of solid samples of 2–5 at room temperature and the magnetic property of 2 have been also reported and discussed in this paper.

One new neodymium compound i.e., neodymium(III) formate with the m.f. Nd(HCOO)3 was synthesized by reaction of Nd(NO3)3·6H2O, thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid and formic acid. The compound has been characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, compound shows a one-dimensional framework. The 3D supramolecular structure is formed via hydrogen bonding connection.

Reported is the synthesis and characterization of a novel three-dimentional americium(III) formate coordination polymer, which features unique C3v site symmetry and atypical emission behavior. Rationalization of inner sphere bonding and unusual optical properties is supported by theoretical QTAIM and NLMO calculations.

New lanthanide complexes involving the two ligands, glycolate and carbonate, have been prepared, as a pure phase, by reacting an aqueous suspension of the corresponding lanthanide formate and glycolic acid in closed reactor, under autogeneous pressure at 200 degrees C for one month. The structure of these compounds was determined from single-crystal X-ray method on neodymium complex. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system (space group P2(1)/n) with a three-dimensional framework structure. The coordination scheme of the two independent neodymium atoms is built up by 9 or 10 oxygen atoms from both glycolate and carbonate ligands. The carbonate group acts as a bismonodentate, bischelating ligand. One glycolate is bischelating while the three latter are chelating and monodentate. Infrared spectrum and thermogravimetric analysis of this family are also presented. A tentative explanation of its synthesis will be briefly discussed. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
