The observation that upon elicitationcell suspension cultures of Eschscholtzia california showed a decrease of dihydromacarpine with a concomittant increase of macarpine led to the discovery of a novel enzyme which catalyzes the oxidation of dihydrobenzophenanthridines in the presence of oxygen.
