    Provided is an organic electroluminescent device (organic EL device), in which the luminous efficiency of the device is improved, driving stability is sufficiently ensured, and the construction of the device is simple. This organic EL device is an organic electroluminescent device, including a light-emitting layer between an anode and a cathode laminated on a substrate, in which the light-emitting layer contains a phosphorescent light-emitting dopant and an indolocarbazole compound as a host material. Examples of the indolocarbazole compound include a compound represented by the following formula (1). It should be noted that in the formulae: a ring A and a ring B are represented by the formulae (1a) and (1b), respectively; Ar's each represent an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic heterocyclic group; R's each represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or a cycloalkyl group; X represents a methine group or a nitrogen atom; A represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, or a group represented by the formula (1c); and n represents 0 or 1.

    Disclosed is an organic electroluminescent device (organic EL device) which is improved in luminous efficiency, fully secure of driving stability, and of a simple configuration. The organic EL device comprises organic layers comprising a hole-transporting layer and a light-emitting layer sandwiched between an anode and a cathode. The light-emitting layer contains a fluorescent light-emitting material and an electron- and/or exciton-blocking layer containing an indolocarbazole derivative represented by general formula (2) is disposed between the hole-transporting layer and the light-emitting layer so as to be adjacent to the light-emitting layer. In general formula (2), ring B is a heterocyclic ring fused to the adjacent rings and represented by formula (1c), Z is an n-valent aromatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic heterocyclic group, and n is 1 or 2.

    Provided are a fluorescence-emitting material which improves luminous efficiency of an organic light-emitting element such as an organic EL element or an organic PL element and an organic light-emitting element using the fluorescence-emitting material. The fluorescence-emitting material includes a compound having an indolocarbazole skeleton represented by the following general formula (1). The organic light-emitting element includes an organic EL element including: a substrate; an anode; a cathode; and a light-emitting layer, the anode and the cathode being laminated on the substrate and the light-emitting layer being sandwiched between the anode and the cathode, in which the light-emitting layer includes: the organic light-emitting material; and as a host material, an organic compound having excited triplet energy higher than that of the organic light-emitting material. In the general formula (1) : a ring A represents an aromatic ring represented by the formula (1a) to be fused with an adjacent ring; a ring B represents a heterocycle represented by the formula (1b) to be fused with an adjacent ring; Ar represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic heterocyclic group; R's each represent hydrogen or a monovalent substituent; and n represents an integer of 1 to 4.
