A substituted carbanilic acid ester of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkinyl, chlorinated C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl or phenyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl, R.sub.2 is hydrogen or chlorine, R.sub.3 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, R.sub.4 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl or phenyl which latter may also be substituted, R.sub.5 is halogen, and R.sub.6 is hydrogen or halogen. The compounds of the invention have a surprisingly high compatibility with rice, wheat, barley, oats, rye, and agricultural grasses when applied in a postemergence procedure. They also have a high activity against weeds of various resistant genera.
