Pathways in nucleophilic fission of hydroxythietanes are determined by the oxidation state of sulphur; for eliminativefission, activation parameters, substituent effects, and comparison with unstrained analogues all suggest a greater degree of ring cleavage in the transition structure for thietanes than for cyclobutanes.
