  1,3-Diaminocyclohexanes of the general formula (I) are suitable for removing carbon dioxide from fluid streams where the radicals R are each, independently of one another, C 1-4 -alkyl; and n is an integer from 0 to 3. The amino groups of the 1,3-diaminocyclohexane are preferably arranged in trans position relative to one another in the plane of the cyclohexane ring. Absorption media for removing carbon dioxide from fluid streams comprise a) a 1,3-diaminocyclohexane of the general formula (I) and b) optionally at least one tertiary amine and/or a sterically hindered primary or secondary amine. In a process for removing carbon dioxide from fluid streams, the absorption medium is brought into contact with a fluid stream.

  In a process for discriminating cis- and trans-1,3-diaminocyclohexanes, a mixture of cis- and trans-1,3-diaminocyclohexanes is reacted with carbon dioxide or a reactive carbonic acid derivative and the urea of the cis-1,3-diaminocyclohexane, which can be separated off by means of a mechanical separation method, is obtained selectively. 4-Methylcyclohexane-1,3-diamine and/or 2-methylcyclohexane-1,3-diamine having a trans content of 99 mol % or more are obtainable in this way.
