    The present invention relates generally to isolated to arginine deiminase (ADI) proteins that have reduced cross-reactivity with anti-ADI-PEG 20 antibodies as compared to ADI-PEG 20 (pegylated ADI derived from M. hominis), but which can have functional characteristics comparable to or better than ADI-PEG 20, compositions comprising the ADI proteins, and related methods of treating arginine-dependent diseases or related diseases such as cancer.

    A polymer comprising one or more macromonomer units selected from the group consisting of polysiloxane, perfluoroalkylpolyether (PFPE), fluorinated poly(meth)acrylate, polyalkyl (meth)acrylate, polyolefin and fluorinated polyolefin, and one or more charged units (such as an anionic, cationic or zwitter-ionic monomer), formed from a polymerization medium containing an aqueous solution of charged units and use of this polymer as an intraocular lens for the implantation into or onto the cornea. Another aspects relates to a process for coating the above polymer with an adhesive comprising covalently coupling co-reactive surface functional groups of a natural or synthetic polymer with functional groups present (or introduced) on the surface of the macromonomer containing polymer, followed by covalently coupling a multifunctionally activated compound having at least one functional group that is co-reactive to the reactive groups of the natural or synthetic polymer.

    The biomedical adhesives of the invention provide a reactive surface to adhere or crosslink to tissue and may be used, for example, as ready-to-use corneal onlay in ophthalmic surgery. The invention provides a method for bonding a bulk material to a corresponding nucleophilic or electrophilic surface including attaching a multifunctionally activated bulk material compound to the bulk material and contacting a functional group of the compound with the surface under conditions permitting covalent linkage between the bulk material and the functional group.

    Crosslinkable compositions are provided that readily crosslink in situ to provide crosslinked biomaterials. The composition contains at least two biocompatible, non-immunogenic components having reactive groups thereon, with the functional groups selected so as to enable inter-reaction between the components, i.e., crosslinking. In one embodiment, a first component has nucleophilic groups and a second component has electrophilic groups. Additional components may have nucleophilic or electrophilic groups. Methods for preparing and using the compositions are also provided as are kits for delivery of the compositions. Exemplary uses for the crosslinked compositions include tissue augmentation, biologically active agent delivery, bioadhesion, and prevention of adhesions following surgery or injury.
