  Both threo and erythro 1-fluorodehydroxylated chloramphenicol analogues were synthesized and tested for antimicrobial activity. None showed antibacterial or antifungal activity, clearly demonstrating that substitution of the secondary hydroxyl group with fluorine abolishes the antibacterial activity of the parent compound, chloramphenicol.
