  • Modification of vinyl dispersion resins for improved elasticity

    The elasticity and dynamic moduli of dispersion grade vinyl resins (particularly polyvinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers derived predominantly from vinyl chloride monomer) are significantly improved by simply blending into a latex of such a vinyl resin a minor proportion of an acrylic rubber latex, the rubbery polymeric solids in which have a glass transition temperature below 0°C. More specifically, said rubber polymeric solids are produced by emulsion polymerization of the following monomers: (a) about 80 to about 98 parts by weight of alkyl acrylates averaging at least 2 carbon atoms per alkyl group; (b) about 1 to about 10 parts by weight of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids containing between 4 and about 8 carbon atoms; and (c) optionally up to 19 weight parts of compatible, additional unsaturated monomers. The resultant, blended latex can be used per se, but is preferably spray dried to form a modified, fine, plastisol grade vinyl resin powder the primary particles of which are mostly from less than 1 to about 2 microns in size. Fluid plastisols formulated from said spray dried resin offer special advantages for use in forming articles requiring greater elasticity and aesthetic tone("feel") than can be obtained from conventional polyvinyl chloride plastisols.

    A binder mixture is described comprising: an aqueous copolymer dispersion which has a glass transition temperature, Tg, of less than 10 °C and which is prepared by emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising: (i) at least 60% by weight, based on the total amount of monomers, of at least one vinyl ester; (ii) from 15 to 30% by weight, based on the total amount of monomers, of ethylene; (iii) from 0.05 to 5 % by weight, based on the total amount of monomers, of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid having at least 4 carbon atoms; and (iv) from 0.05 to 5 % by weight, based on the total amount of monomers, of an ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid or salt thereof.

    Objects of the present invention are to provide a composition which can easily give cured products enriched with hydrophilic groups at the surface, and a composition which can give cured products while ensuring that the surface is enriched with hydrophilic groups which are hardly concentrated at the surface by conventional methods; to provide cured products obtained from such compositions; to provide a composition which is suited for producing cured products having high and long-lasting hydrophilicity and also having high surface smoothness; and to provide a cured product obtained from the composition. A monolayer film is fabricated which includes a crosslinked resin obtained by polymerizing a composition including a compound (I) having at least one hydrophilic group selected from anionic hydrophilic groups, cationic hydrophilic groups and hydroxyl groups, and at least one functional group with a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond (wherein the number of the functional groups with a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond is one when the hydrophilic group is a hydroxyl-containing group); a compound (II) having two or more functional groups with a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond (wherein the compound may have a hydroxyl group but is free from anionic hydrophilic groups and cationic hydrophilic groups); and at least one compound selected from a surfactant (III) having a hydrophilic moiety including an anionic hydrophilic group, a cationic hydrophilic group or two or more hydroxyl groups, and a hydrophobic moiety including an organic residue, and a compound (IV) having a siloxane bond and a molecular weight of 200 to 1,000,000 (wherein the surfactant (III) and the compound (IV) have no polymerizable carbon-carbon double bonds). The monolayer film has a gradient of hydrophilic group concentration (Sa/Da) of not less than 1.1 wherein Sa is the surface concentration of at least one type of hydrophilic groups selected from anionic hydrophilic groups, cationic hydrophilic groups and hydroxyl groups, and Da is the deep concentration of the hydrophilic groups at 1/2 of the thickness of the monolayer film.
