    A supported titanium catalyst component for use in propylene polymerization is prepared by copulverizing a mixture of magnesium dichloride, titanium tetrachloride- ethylbenzoate 1: 1 adduct and hexachloroethane for 20 to 44 hrs., and then treating the resulting titanium-containing solid with n-heptane solution of hexachloroethane. Bulk polymerization of propylene in the presence of H2 with the catalyst composed of the supported titanium catalyst component and the organo aluminum catalyst component composed of triisobutyl aluminum and ethylbenzoate at 68°C. for half an hour gives higher catalyst efficiency (above 200,000 g PP/g-Ti) and sufficient heptane insolubles (92 to 97%).

    A supported titanium catalyst component is produced by cogrinding an organo aluminum catalyst component with a supported titanium (IV) halide on a magnesium halide. The resulting supported titanium halide catalyst component, when employed with an organo aluminum catalyst component to form a catalyst system is highly useful for the stereoregular polymerization of α-olefins as well as the copolymerization of α-olefins.

    A supported titanium catalyst component, suitable for use in the polymerization of alph-olefins, is produced by treating a supported titanium-containing solid obtained by co-pulverization of a magnesium halide, a tetravalent titanium halide which may also comprise an electron donor compound and/or a halogen compound with an organohalogen compound. The component is thereafter treated with an organoaluminum compound and an electron donor compound. The resulting supported titanium catalyst, when employed as a titanium component with an organoaluminum catalyst componet results on a catalyst system useful for the polymerization of alpha-olefins.

    Racemic carboxylic acids are resolved into their enantiomers using optically active enantiomers of four lactones as resolving agents. The four lactones are 2,3-isopropylidene-ribonic acid-1,4-lactone; 1,2-isopropylidene-. glucofuranurono-3,6-lactone; 2-hydroxy-3,3-dimethyi-1,4- butyrolactone and 3,4-isopropylidene-arabino-1,5-lactone. Novel diastereoisomeric esters of the acids with the lactones are disclosed.
