    The invention provides a composition comprising: (a) a star polymer comprising: (i) a core portion comprising a polyvalent (meth)acrylic monomer, oligomer or polymer thereof or a polyvalent divinyl non-acrylic monomer, oligomer or polymer thereof; and (ii) at least two arms of polymerized alkyl(meth)acrylate ester; and (b) an oil of lubricating viscosity, wherein the core portion further comprises a functional group of formula (I): —CH 2 —C(R 1 )(C(═O)A)-Y—  (I) wherein R 1 is hydrogen, a linear or branched alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms; A is nitrogen or oxygen; and Y is a free radical leaving group selected from the group consisting of one or more atoms or groups of atoms which may be transferred by a radical mechanism under the polymerisation conditions, a halogen, an —O—N═ group and an —S—C(═S)— group. The invention further provides the use of the composition in an oil of lubricating viscosity as a dispersant, a viscosity modifier or a precursor to a dispersant viscosity modifier.

    Graft copolymers of nitrogenous monomer(s) on polymeric substrates, and their methods of preparation, are provided. The graft copolymers are produced by polymerizing monomers comprising one or more vinyl monomer into a polymeric substrate, and then grafting one or more nitrogenous monomer onto the polymeric substrate. Hybrid copolymers of a nitrogenous grafted copolymer with a nitrogenous random polymer, and methods for their preparation, are also provided. the hybrid copolymers can be prepared by first forming the nitrogenous graft copolymer and then copolymerizing additional constituent vinyl monomer(s) with residual nitrogenous monomer(s) to form the hybrid copolymer.

    This invention is concerned with a polymer useful as an ashless dispersant additive which provides a combination of dispersancy, good cold cranking engine start-up, low-temperature viscosity properties and neutral behaviour towards fluoropolymer engine seal materials, and is obtainable by polymerising one or more alkyl methacrylate with one or more hydroxy-alkyl methacrylate while controlling the relative weight ratio of the component monomers to obtain an appropriate carbon atom content in the alkyl side chain portion of the methacrylate backbone polymer to achieve desired additive solubility properties.
