4-aminomethylene-2-benzyl-4H-oxazol-5-one (1) and the benzylpenicillic acid (2) were obtained as degraded or re-arranged derivatives of Penicillin G (PenH), which have been treated with silver nitrate. The products were characterized by their melting point, 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. These alterations might be the etiology of penicillin deactivation.
