  Iodine mediated rapid conversion of 2-amino-3-cyano-4-aryl-4H chromenes to the corresponding coumarins in the presence of water is described. Several chromenes are obtained in high yields without chromatographic purification. Under anhydrous conditions, 2-iminochromenes are obtained as major products. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
