    A number of dibenzocycloheptenone derivatives, a novel series of aldose reductase inhibitors, were synthesized and evaluated in vitro for their ability to inhibit rat lens aldose reductase enzyme. The design of these ARIs was based on previously published pharmacophore requirements. The most active compound in this series was a spirosuccinimide derivative, spiro{2,8-dihydroxy-5H-dibenzo[a, d]cycloheptene-5,3'-pyrrolidine}-2',5'-dione 11, having an IC50 of 3.0 mu M (C) Elsevier, Paris.

    The application relates to a method for mass spectrometry analysis of components in a sample whereby said components are labeled with a mass tag. Said mass tags are compounds capable of generating aromatic ions containing 4n+2 electrons in a closed ring system whereby the method for mass spectrometry includes detecting by mass spectrometry of aromatic ions containing 4n+2 electrons in the closed ring system whereby the charge is located within the aromatic system. In preferred embodiments, the tags comprise triaryl-cyclopropenium and substituted dibenzo-cycloheptatrienyl (tropyl) carbonium ions. A kit of reagents comprising such mass tags is also disclosed.
