  A process for preparing pirbuterol, or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, which comprise the solvolysis of a compound of the formula:- wherein Y is benzyl or CN3CO-, or, alternatively, when Y is benzyl, a combination of solvolysis and hydrogenolysis of the compound (VIII), followed by, optionally, conversion of the pirbuterol into a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt by reaction with a suitable acid. Intermediate (VIII) is also covered per se.
