Copper-Catalyzed Synthesis of 2-Unsubstituted, N-Substituted Benzimidazoles

An efficient copper-catalyzed intramolecular arylation of formamidines forming 2-unsubstituted benzimidazoles in excellent yields is reported. Sixteen examples bearing sterically demanding substituents on nitrogen like Mes, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, or 2-tert-butylphenyl and tolerating various functional groups demonstrate the utility of this method.
Copper, Silver and Sodium Salt-Mediated Quaternization by Arylation: Syntheses of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Precursors and 6-<i>H</i>-Phenanthridine Derivatives
synthesize a variety of N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors with a benzene‐fused backbone. The methodology also provides a convenient alternative route for the synthesis of 6‐H‐phenanthridine derivatives. A novel silver–NHC complex was prepared by treatment of Ag2O with the free carbene, which was in situ prepared from the deprotonation of a representative quinazolinonium salt.

Articles and methods comprising persistent carbenes are provided, as well as related compositions. In some embodiments, a persistent carbene may be associated with a portion of a substrate (e.g., at least a portion of a surface on the substrate). In certain embodiments, the association of persistent carbene with the substrate may be used to affect certain properties of substrate (e.g., surface chemistry, stability). In some cases, a persistent carbene may be functionalized after association with a portion of a substrate. In some embodiments, a persistent carbene and at least one secondary compound may be associated with a portion of a substrate. Articles and methods of the present invention may be useful for applications involving electronics, sensing, microfabrication, nanotechnology, biomimetic, and drug delivery, amongst others.
