A temperature sensing composition and thermometer utilizing said composition wherein the temperature sensing composition comprises a cholesteric liquid crystal in combination with a first dye having a maximum absorption of about 540 to about 640 nanometers and a second dye having a maximum absorption of about 380 to about 520 nanometers. Each dye is present at about 0.02 to about 0.25 weight percent based on the liquid crystal. The ratio of first dye to second dye is preferably about 1:4 to about 4:1; more preferably about 1:1 to 4:1. The preferred dyes are oil soluble azo dyes.
