    A flame retardant rubber composition includes (A) an ethylene/α-olefin random copolymer, (B) an unsaturated nitrile/conjugated diene rubber, and (D) surface-treated natural magnesium hydroxide or includes (A) an ethylene/α-olefin random copolymer, (B) an unsaturated nitrile/conjugated diene rubber, (C) a hydrogenated diene polymer, and (D) surface-treated natural magnesium hydroxide. Since the rubber composition and rubber product have good flame retardance, weather resistance, and oil resistance, as well as excellent mechanical characteristics, they are useful for various applications such as a roll, belt, and sealing material for copying machines, an electric wire coating material, and hoses.

    The invention relates to functionalized, telechelic polymers synthesized by enzymatic catalysis and methods, and the functionalization of polymers via Michael addition with a lipase catalyst, and the crosslinking of mono- or difunctional (telechelic) polymers made by enzymatic catalysis, such as by using multifunctional coupling agents and enzyme catalysts. Quantitative transesterification of vinyl methacrylate with poly(ethylene glycol), poly(isobutylene) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) was achieved using Candida antarctica lipase B. In addition, methacrylate-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether has been successfully coupled to aminoethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether via Michael addition using Candida antarctica lipase B. Amine-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol)s have also been used for the preparation of poly(ethylene glycol)-based dendrimers and gels through Michael addition of the polymer onto triacryloyl hexahydro-triazine using the same enzyme. 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy verified the structure of the functionalized polymers.

    O Water-absorbent, starch copolymerisates which comprise a non-linear lattice of starch chains linked together by polymeric linkages represented by the formula wherein Starch represents a starch chain of D-glucose units, Z represents an organo group which links the group to the carbon atom of the starch chain by a sulphur or an oxygen atom, R is hydrogen or a monovalent organic radical, M represents a plurality of copolymerised ethylenically unsaturated monomers with "p" representing the number of copolymerised monomeric units in the linkage, (W) is a water-attractant group linked to the polymeric linkage and "n" represents the number of (W) moieties contained within the polymeric linkage of the copolymerised monomers with the number of (W) moieties being sufficient to impart water-absorbency properties to the copolymerisate. The water-absorbent starch copolymerisate may be easily prepared into a desired configuration for a particular end-use or combined with other substrates or carriers. The unpolymerised starch and monomers or precursors thereof may be applied or incorporated into a suitable carrier.or substrate and copolymerised in situ to provide a composite article of unitary construction with the water-absorbent starch copolymerisate permanently bonded or affixed thereto.
