New heteroditopic bis(calix[4]arene) rhenium(I) bipyridyl receptors are synthesised and shown to simultaneously bind alkali metal cations and iodide anion with positive cooperativity.

A procedure is reported for synthesizing a novel, water-soluble bifunctional chelating agent derived from calix[4]arene. This chelate features tetracarboxylic acid groups at the lower rim as an actinium-225 ionophore, and an isothiocyanate functional group at the upper rim for labeling of the N-terminus of monoclonal antibodies through thiourea linkage.

New heteroditopic bis(calix[4]arene) rhenium(I) bipyridyl (L1, L2) and ferrocene (L4) receptor molecules have been prepared and shown to bind a variety of anions at the upper rim and alkali metal cations at the lowerrim. Proton NMR anion titration studies reveal the strength and selectivity of anion binding was dependent upon the presence of the calix[4]arene moieties and nature of the bridging group
