    An ionic compound capable of providing a cured material having superior antibacterial property and oxygen permeability, and a composition containing the ionic compound, and a cured material, a hydro gel and an ophthalmic lens which have long-term sustainable antibacterial property and superior oxygen permeability. The ionic compound is represented by the following formula (1): In formula (1), P represents a polymerizable functional group. Q + represents a cationic group: Z represents an n-valent siloxanyl group in which the total atomic weight of a group of constituent atoms is no less than 70 and no greater than 1,000; X m− represents an m-valent anion; and n is an integer of 1 to 10, where provided that n is no less than 2, a plurality of P3 and Q + 3 are each independently as defined above.

    Process for manufacturing a composite membrane comprising a porous support and a polymeric separation layer having acidic or basic groups comprising the steps of: (i) applying a composition to a porous support; and (ii) curing the composition to form the polymeric separation layer thereon; wherein the composition comprises the components (a) a compound having one ethylenically unsaturated group; and (b) a crosslinking agent having an acrylamide group; and wherein the curing is achieved by irradiating the composition for less than 30 seconds. The membranes are useful in reverse electrodialysis e.g. for generating blue energy and have good resistance to deterioration, even under hot and high pH conditions.

    O Water-absorbent, starch copolymerisates which comprise a non-linear lattice of starch chains linked together by polymeric linkages represented by the formula wherein Starch represents a starch chain of D-glucose units, Z represents an organo group which links the group to the carbon atom of the starch chain by a sulphur or an oxygen atom, R is hydrogen or a monovalent organic radical, M represents a plurality of copolymerised ethylenically unsaturated monomers with "p" representing the number of copolymerised monomeric units in the linkage, (W) is a water-attractant group linked to the polymeric linkage and "n" represents the number of (W) moieties contained within the polymeric linkage of the copolymerised monomers with the number of (W) moieties being sufficient to impart water-absorbency properties to the copolymerisate. The water-absorbent starch copolymerisate may be easily prepared into a desired configuration for a particular end-use or combined with other substrates or carriers. The unpolymerised starch and monomers or precursors thereof may be applied or incorporated into a suitable carrier.or substrate and copolymerised in situ to provide a composite article of unitary construction with the water-absorbent starch copolymerisate permanently bonded or affixed thereto.

    A stabilized solution of a copolymer composed of an aminoalkyl acrylate unit or aminoalkyl methacrylate unit and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer unit, which is prepared by dissolving the copolymer in a mixed solvent containing a ketone solvent in a ratio of about 20 to 80wt.% to the total solvent weight. The stabilized solution possesses highly improved storage stability, thus standing long-term storage; it works well for paints, adhesives, primers, etc. Its adhesive property to various substances is further improved by adding a coupling agent. In addition, a paint film excellent in adhesion, water resistance, chemical resistance, and weatherproofness can be obtained by using both the stabilized solution of the base copolymer and either a compound having at least 2 acryloyl groups in each molecule, a blocked polyisocyanate compound, or an epoxy compound as a hardener.

    A copolymer is prepared, by high pressure radical polymerisation, of, by wt, 40-95 % of ethylene, 5 -60 % of at least one aminoalkyl acrylate of the formula: where R, is H or methyl, R2 and R3 each are C1 -4. alkyl and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and optionally also up to 20 % of another copolymerizable monomer, the copolymer having a number average molecular weight of 5000 to 50,000. The copolymer is molded to pellets, beads, sheets, mats, cloth or cartridges and used as a filter to sorb metal ions, other than Fe or Co, from waste industrial aqueous solution containing metal ions, e.g. ions of Pd, Cr or U, the solution being adjusted to appropriate pH. The copolymer can be washed with water of different pH to recover the metal; or it can be burnt and the metal recovered from the ash.
